Pieter Bruegel’s Symbolic Highlands in the Lowlands
نویسنده
چکیده
10 Pieter Bruegel the Elder, while best known for his representations of the landscapes and rustic inhabitants of his native Lowlands, did not restrict himself to these topics—in fact, most of his paintings address religious subjects, even when placing them in carefully constructed landscapes. When Bruegel represented biblical events, such as the Tower of Babel or the Conversion of Saint Paul, he placed them in meaningful settings, whether flatlands or mountains. As this article will argue, the chosen environment for many of his religious images uses the landscape to underscore and frame the spiritual message of his images and to require his viewers to inspect his pictures more carefully, evoking a mode of “spiritual seeing.” DOI: 10.18277/makf.2015.01

Parasite threshold associated with clinical malaria in areas of different transmission intensities in north eastern Tanzania
BACKGROUND In Sub-Sahara Africa, malaria due to Plasmodium falciparum is the main cause of ill health. Evaluation of malaria interventions, such as drugs and vaccines depends on clinical definition of the disease, which is still a challenge due to lack of distinct malaria specific clinical features. Parasite threshold is used in definition of clinical malaria in evaluation of interventions. Thi...
متن کاملGenetic divergence and speciation in lowland and montane peruvian poison frogs.
Amazonia is famous for high biodiversity, and the highlands of the transition zone between the Andes and the lowlands of the Amazon basin show particularly high species diversity. Hypotheses proposed to explain the high levels of diversity in the highlands include repeated parapatric speciation across ecological gradients spanning the transition zone, repeated allopatric speciation across geogr...
متن کاملRelationship between infant mortality and altitude in the Northwest region of Argentina.
INTRODUCTION Given its location on the Andes, the Northwest region of Argentina is geographically, socioeconomically, culturally, and biologically heterogeneous, and this is reflected on an infant mortality rate (IMR) that is higher than in any other Argentine region. OBJETIVE To estimate IMR, neonatal mortality rate (NMR), and post-neonatal mortality rate (PNMR), and to analyze their spatial...
متن کاملLead (Pb) Isotope Baselines for Studies of Ancient Human Migration and Trade in the Maya Region
We examined the potential use of lead (Pb) isotopes to source archaeological materials from the Maya region of Mesoamerica. The main objectives were to determine if: 1) geologic terrains throughout the Maya area exhibit distinct lead isotope ratios (206Pb/204Pb, 207Pb/204Pb, and 208Pb/204Pb), and 2) a combination of lead and strontium ratios can enhance sourcing procedures in the Mesoamerica re...
متن کاملLarge-diameter Visible and Buried Impact Basins on Mars: Implications for Age of the Highlands and (buried) Lowlands and Turn-off of the Global Magnetc Field
The global populations of visible and buried impact basins > 200 km diameter revealed by high resolution gridded MOLA indicate: (a) a small (~10) number of very large basins (D=1300-3000km), most of which have remained visible over martian history; (b) a much larger population of smaller basins (D=200-800 km) with many more buried than visible (on images); (c) a depletion of visible basins at i...
